Changes in Phenolics Content by Developmental Stage , Washing , and NaOCl Treatment of White Forsythia Seeds

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the changes in phenolics content according to seed development, washing, and NaOCl treatment, and then to examine the relationship between germination and phenolics contents in white forsythia (Abeliophyllum distichum Nakai) seed. The development patterns of seed were divided into three stages, 1) external seed development stage, 2) internal seed development stage, and 3) seed maturity stage. Until 105 days after anthesis, content of phenolics in seed coat greatly decreased according to seed development, while those in embryo nealy did not change and were kept at low concentration ever since 75 days after anthesis. Washing treatment with running water at 30¡É for 7 days significantly decreased content of phenolics in Bead coat. Also, soaking treatment at 5% NaOCl for 60 minutes effectively removed the phenolics in seed coat, and also stripped off part of seed coat.
